The county’s safe communities committee is looking to hire a development coordinator, members of its leadership committee decided on Sept. 19 at their monthly meeting at the OPP detachment here.
The committee is hiring for a contract position with a limit of $15,000 over a nine-month period.
The hiring will be done by a three-member hiring committee, which will inform the board of the successful candidate at its November meeting.
The coordinator is expected to assist with programs initiated by the committee. The competition for the coordinator post will be open.
The safe communities committee, which recently received national designation, has chosen three categories on which it will focus: injuries and deaths resulting from falls, on- and off -road accidents, and self harm.
The committee is currently operating with a $22,000 budget.
Committee co-chairman OPP Sergeant Jack Hunjan said the budget for the position should be limited.
“Given the money we have we really don’t have a choice,” Hunjan said.
Co-chair and county councillor Gary Williamson said the position would require about two days of work per week.
Williamson said the committee has spent about $3,000 for safety road signs that have been erected throughout the county and include messages of potential hazards drivers might find in the county, including buggies using local roadways.
Centre Wellington councillor and committee member Mary Lloyd suggested the committee establish a strategic plan, something that is expected to be determined by committee representatives from public health services.
A plan is expected to go before the committee at its November meeting.
